Ed Wells Unveils New Single "GMT"
“A husky-voiced piano man par excellence… with a voice that would melt butter.” – The AU Review
Hailing from Sydney and currently making a name for himself as both an artist and legal student in the UK, Ed Wells has developed his own unique blend of modern-day, classic soul.
Ed’s music is a pure reflection of his diverse experiences and sonic influences. Wells is a performer by nature and a highly-skilled, highly-accomplished pianist. He showcased these talents with a performance of his song “Midnight Man” for Sofar Sounds London and has performed at distinguished venues like The Troubadour Club (past performers include Bob Dylan and Adele), while his singles have amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify all over the globe.
His new single ‘GMT’ explores some of the quirks of our modern society and, for better or worse, our obsession with time. Moreover, it questions our ability to live in the present when there seems to be a constant focus on what lies in the future. It, somewhat satirically considering the fundamental nature of the concept, suggests ‘living off time’ in order to see the world as it really is.
Speaking about his new single Ed says, “GMT’ is largely about the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the importance of being able to take a step back from that. I manage to take
that step back when I visit family in the Yorkshire countryside (which ironically is where I did most of the work on the song when I was writing it).”
GMT is the second single to be lifted off his forthcoming EP – ‘Home’. Sonically, ‘Home’ draws on Ed’s equally diverse musical upbringing. Flavours of soul and jazz, inspired by the likes of D’Angelo and Jordan Rakei are blended with lush pop soundscapes from artists such as Bon Iver and Jeff Buckley. His dark yet powerful voice anchors the music, and the mature mix of electronic and acoustic elements creates a sound which is truly evocative and unique.
‘GMT’ is lifted off his ‘HOME’ EP released by Ditto Music on February 7th 2020.
